Syria was a French colony after World War I until WWII. Some of the architecture is French.
These days most of the cars are Japanese and Korean, but you can still see an old French car once and a while, like this Peugot.
Ash-sham is the area now made up of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine/Israel, and Jordan ... maybe Iraq too, but I'm not going there. This blog is about yours truly's visit there in October/November 2009
