Probably the most famous ruins in Syria. Palmyra was most powerful when one Queen Zenobia ruled. At her peak she defeated legions sent from Rome, even invading and taking control of Egypt.
Ash-sham is the area now made up of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine/Israel, and Jordan ... maybe Iraq too, but I'm not going there. This blog is about yours truly's visit there in October/November 2009
